One of the first things a doctor says when He examines a patient is “open your mouth and say Ahhh!” It is often possible to make a check of a person’s health by looking inside their mouth. Some sicknesses can be detected by the tongue’s appearance. This is also a true test of our spiritual condition. A person’s speech reveals what is going on inside their heart. “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34).
Our conversation and speech tells much about us. Our language, our accent, our phrases, reveal a lot about us. The things we like or dislike. The things that are important and not important to you. The use of profanity or no profanity says much about ourselves. Our mouth reveals our spiritual state. Jesus said that a good person produces good words from a good heart. An evil person produces evil words from their evil heart, (Matthew 12:35).
Most of us take our ability to speak for granted. Animals cannot do it, only humans. By the time we were a certain age as a young child we could speak with some clarity. Our ability to talk grew with our need to convey what we felt or wanted. The words we strung together carried the power to build up or tear down.
They reflected what our hearts were feeling. Now that we are saved and belong to Christ we need to speak and talk the way Christ desires us to talk. James 3:2 says those who control their tongue (speech) can also control themselves in everything. How can we control our tongue (mouth)? By letting Christ control our heart. If you do not give yourself to Christ in the pardon of your sins then you can not possibly speak in a way that pleases Him.
If Christ is not our Lord, then He cannot and will not be able to control your mouth. You cannot speak right unless you have Christ sitting on the throne of your heart as Lord. What are you saying when you open your mouth?
People can tame all kinds of animals and birds, but no human can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrolled evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and sometimes it breaks out into cursing. Blessing and Cursing come pouring out of the same mouth brothers and sisters this should not be. It’s not right that both fresh water and bitter water comes from the same spring, (James 3:7-12).
When a person speaks this way they should realize that they are sick deep in their heart and need God to replace their evil heart with His pure righteous heart. Have you noticed what you have been saying lately? Open your mouth to doctor Jesus and say, “Ahhh, will trust You!”
