When you have been in the hot heat and been working or exercising for a while you probably will be thirsty for something to drink. If you don’t drink water or fluids over a long period of time you will get dehydrated. The bible tells us that is the way we should desire God.
Thirst after Him. Psalms 42:1,2 Says, “As the hart (Deer) pants after the water brook, so pants my soul after thee. O God. My Soul thirsts for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?”
The secret of satisfying the thirst is to come to Jesus our Lord. St. John 7:37 – “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the scripture said, From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.”
There is a common thought in the world of sports and the world of business and that is if you want it bad enough (thirsty) you will get it. How bad do you really want God and His ways? Do you really desire Him?
Psalms 63:1-8 gives us a good picture of only wanting God through our will. Seven I will’s for God are here in this text.
- I will seek You (God) v1
- I will want You (God) v1, 2
- I will live for You (God) v4
- I will serve You (God) v4
- I will praise You (God) v3
- I will remember You (God) v6
- I will rejoice in You (God) v7
When a person desires God this way then it is proof that they are thirsty for God. God says the way He satisfies this thirsty desire is when a person is born again. When you are forgiven of your sin through trusting Christ, God also gives us His Holy Spirit.
Verse 39 of chapter 7 of St. John says He gives us the Holy Spirit. God the Holy Spirit now dwells in the heart of that believer. Remember your mouth will reflect your thirst.
The thirst of the mouth reminds me of these sayings. A loose tongue often gets its owner into a tight place. When you are in deep water, it’s a good idea to keep your mouth shut.
When we control our tongue we are letting God have access to our will. When we don’t, then we are running things our way not God’s way. How bad do you want
what God want’s for you? Until you are thirsty for Him, you will never find satisfaction.
I like this illustration of being thirsty. After giving a woman a full medical examination, the doctor explained his prescription as he wrote it out. “Take the green pill with a full glass of water when you get up.
Take the blue pill with a full glass of water after lunch. Then just before bed, take the red pill with another full glass of water.” “Exactly what is my problem, Doctor?” the women asked. The Doctor says, “You’re not drinking enough water.”
Just like the woman we are not thirsty enough for God. We don’t want Him nor His ways to be over our life. Is it true that you really are not thirsty for God. “How
thirsty are you for God?”
